For years, cash account day trading was the standard advice for anyone under $25,000. The pattern day trader rule limited margin accounts below that line to three day trades in five business days, so small traders traded settled cash instead.
That changed in 2026. The SEC approved FINRA's rewrite in April, and the pattern day trader designation and its $25,000 minimum ended on June 4. Margin accounts with more than $2,000 now get intraday margin, and each broker sets the limits.
The switch is not instant everywhere. Brokers have until October 20, 2027 to move over, so some may still count day trades for a while. Your broker's own rules page is the only reliable answer for your account.
The bigger problem for a small account was never only the rule. It is costs, position size and the temptation to trade too often. A scanner fee or a wide spread that would not matter at $100,000 can quietly eat a $2,000 account.
This finder asks five questions about what holds you back, your account size, your approach, your tool budget and what would help most. Cash account day trading still has its place, since trades use settled funds only. Whatever route you take, the tools should cost less than they save you.
