Connect Your AI deep dive
Financial Datasets MCP is a small open-source plug that lets an AI assistant like
Claude pull company financial statements, stock prices, news, and crypto prices from the
Financial Datasets data service. It is one of the easiest ways for a beginner to stop an AI from guessing at numbers. The catch: you need a Financial Datasets API key, which is a paid data service, and the server code has not been updated since June 2025.
Think of it as giving your AI assistant a library card to a financial data library, so it reads the actual 10-K numbers instead of reciting them from memory.

Ask a chatbot for
Apple's latest quarterly revenue and you may get a confident number from its training data that is a year out of date. Financial Datasets MCP fixes that specific problem. An MCP server is a plug that lets an AI assistant like Claude read data or use an app, and this one connects Claude to the Financial Datasets API, a commercial market data service.
The README lists a tight set of tools. For stocks: income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, current price, historical prices, and company news. For crypto: a list of available tickers, current prices, and historical prices. That is it. No order placement, no broker connection, no trading. It is read-only research plumbing.
The Financial Datasets website says its data covers more than 27,000 stock tickers and 30-plus years of fundamentals, along with SEC filings, insider trades, and other metrics. Those extra datasets exist on the service, but this server's README exposes only the statements, prices, news, and crypto tools listed above. If you need insider trades in chat, this repo does not wire them up.
Here is the market truth. Bad decisions rarely come from missing data anymore. They come from fuzzy data dressed up as fact. A tool that forces the AI to cite real statements is a quiet upgrade to your process. It will not tell you what to buy, and that is a feature.
How does that look in practice? Ask Claude to compare the last four quarters of cash flow for two companies, and Financial Datasets MCP fetches the statements while the AI lays them side by side. Ask for a stock's 2024 price history and company news, and you get both in one answer. The README's own example prompts cover Apple income statements,
Tesla's current price, and
Microsoft's 2024 price history.

Financial Datasets MCP has over 2,300 GitHub stars and roughly 350 forks (copies people make to build on), which signals real interest from builders. Public discussion is a different story. We found a single
Hacker News submission with zero comments and no useful Reddit threads.
So the stars say developers bookmarked it, often as a reference example of a clean finance MCP server. The silence says few people are writing about long-term use. Combined with no code updates since June 2025, the Community Score lands at middling: strong adoption, weak maintenance, insufficient sentiment.
What they like
What they complain about
A Financial Datasets API key
Every tool fetches data from the Financial Datasets service, which needs a key. It is a commercial data provider with paid plans.
An MCP-capable AI client
The README walks through Claude Desktop setup. Other MCP clients can run the same server.
Python 3.10 or newer with uv
The server is a Python script launched through uv.
Stale code
No pushes since June 2025. If the Financial Datasets API changes, nobody may update this server to match.
Paid data dependency
The repo is free, but the data is not. Your access depends on a third-party subscription and its terms.
Narrow tool set
Only statements, prices, news, and crypto prices are exposed, even though the data service offers more. You may outgrow it fast.
AI can still misread good data
Real numbers in, wrong conclusion out is still possible. Check key figures against the original filing before acting.
News is not analysis
The company news tool returns headlines and articles. An AI summarizing a burst of headlines can overweight noise, which is exactly the trap disciplined investors try to avoid.

Financial Datasets MCP does one job well: it puts real company financials inside an AI conversation with almost no setup drama. For a beginner who wants Claude to stop guessing at revenue and debt figures, it is one of the cleanest read-only options on GitHub, and its 2,300-plus stars show builders agree.
Compare it with the broker-connected MCP servers in this directory. Those can move money, so they need dry runs, approval prompts, and caps. Financial Datasets MCP cannot place an order at all. For a reader who wants AI help with research and zero chance of a fat-finger trade, that limitation is the selling point.
The honest catch is maintenance and cost. The code has gone quiet, and the data comes from a paid service. Use Financial Datasets MCP as a research upgrade, keep a habit of checking one number against the source filing, and treat the AI as an analyst intern, not the portfolio manager.
Financial Datasets MCP is an open-source MCP server that lets Claude and other AI assistants pull income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, stock prices, company news, and crypto prices from the Financial Datasets API.
The server code is free under the MIT license. The data requires a Financial Datasets API key, which is a commercial service with paid plans, so check their pricing page before you commit.
Yes. The README gives a step-by-step Claude Desktop config. After a restart, the tools appear in Claude's tools menu.
No. It is read-only. It fetches financial statements, prices, news, and crypto prices, and it has no broker connection.
The repo has had no code pushes since June 2025. It still serves as a clear working example, but expect to fix any breakage yourself.
