Connect Your AI deep dive
Freqtrade MCP is a small open-source plug that lets an AI assistant like
Claude check on and control a
Freqtrade crypto trading bot you already run. You can ask for profit, open trades, and balances in plain English, or tell it to start, stop, or place a trade. The catch: it adds no safety layer of its own, so whether those commands touch real money depends entirely on how your Freqtrade bot is configured.
Think of it as a walkie-talkie between you, your AI assistant, and the trading robot already running in your garage.

Freqtrade is one of the best-known free, open-source crypto trading bots, written in Python and supported on exchanges including
Binance,
Kraken,
OKX, Bybit,
Gate,
Bitget, and
Hyperliquid. It already has its own controls: a web dashboard called FreqUI,
Telegram commands, and a REST API (a set of web addresses software uses to send it commands). Freqtrade MCP plugs into that REST API.
An MCP server is a plug that lets an AI assistant like Claude read data or use an app. Freqtrade MCP, built by the kukapay developer group, exposes 17 tools. Ten read information: market data, bot status, profit, balance, performance, whitelist, blacklist, trades, config, and locks. Seven take action: place a trade, start the bot, stop the bot, reload the config, add or remove a pair from the blacklist, and delete a lock.
In practice, you can ask "how did the bot do this week and which pairs lost money?" and get an answer drawn from your own bot instead of a guess. You can also say "stop the bot" or "buy 50 USDT of ETH." That second category is where the power and the risk live.
Here is the market truth. The Freqtrade MCP README does not mention dry-run mode at all. Dry run is a Freqtrade setting that trades with fake money against real prices, and the Freqtrade docs recommend starting there. If your bot runs live, an AI-issued place_trade command is a real order. The plug simply passes the message along.
So where does Freqtrade MCP earn its keep? Reporting. A bot throws off a lot of numbers, and most traders stop reading them after week two. Asking Claude for a weekly recap of losing pairs, lock history, and profit by strategy turns that pile into a habit. Habits, not hunches, are what keep a bot honest.

We found no Reddit or Hacker News threads specifically about Freqtrade MCP worth citing. The repo has around 150 stars and 40 forks (copies people make to build on), modest numbers next to Freqtrade itself, which is one of the most popular open-source trading bots on GitHub.
The gap makes sense. Most Freqtrade users already control their bots through FreqUI or Telegram, and adding an AI layer is still a niche move. The last code push was December 2025, so it is not abandoned, but it is not busy either. Expect to read the code yourself before trusting it.
What they like
What they complain about
A running Freqtrade bot
Freqtrade MCP only talks to an existing Freqtrade instance through its REST API.
A supported crypto exchange account
Freqtrade needs an exchange to pull prices and, in live mode, place orders. The Freqtrade docs list these among supported exchanges.
An MCP-capable AI client
The README gives a generic mcpServers config that clients like Claude Desktop accept.
Python 3.13 or newer
The server is Python and its README sets 3.13 as the minimum.
No built-in safety layer
The README describes no confirmation step, trade size cap, or dry-run check. place_trade sends whatever stake amount the AI passes.
Live bot means live orders
If Freqtrade runs in live mode, AI-issued trades use real money. Dry run is set in Freqtrade, not in this connector.
Exposed API is a doorway
The REST API can start, stop, and trade. Keep it on 127.0.0.1, use strong credentials, and never expose it to the internet.
Small project, modest upkeep
Around 150 stars and a last push in December 2025. If Freqtrade changes its API, fixes may lag.
Some exchanges block US users
Several Freqtrade-supported exchanges, including
Bybit, do not serve US residents. Check your exchange's terms before going live.

Freqtrade MCP is a neat, honest piece of glue. If you already run Freqtrade, asking Claude "what is my profit and which pairs are dragging?" is faster than clicking through dashboards, and the code is small enough to read in one sitting.
But Freqtrade MCP adds convenience, not judgment. Keep the bot in dry run while you test, leave approval prompts on for every action tool, and treat AI-issued trades as drafts you sign. The bot executes the strategy. The AI answers questions. You stay the risk manager.
Freqtrade MCP is an open-source MCP server that connects AI assistants like Claude to a running Freqtrade crypto bot through Freqtrade's REST API. It offers 17 tools for checking status and profit and for actions like placing trades or stopping the bot.
Yes. Freqtrade is free and open source, and Freqtrade MCP is free under the MIT license. You still pay exchange trading fees on live trades and any cost of your AI client.
The Freqtrade MCP README does not mention dry run. Dry run is a setting inside Freqtrade itself, so if your bot runs in dry-run mode, trades sent through the MCP server use simulated money.
Freqtrade has its own machine learning module called FreqAI for strategy research. Freqtrade MCP is different: it lets a chat assistant like Claude talk to and control your bot, not design its signals.
No. Freqtrade is a crypto trading bot, and its docs list crypto exchanges such as Binance, Kraken, OKX, and Hyperliquid. Freqtrade MCP inherits that crypto-only scope.
